My Most Anticipated Book Releases (Autumn 2020 Edition)

Image
We've reached the autumn season, when the temptation to curl up with a good book in front of the fire is at it's highest. What's more, this unexpected year yields a bounty of new and forthcoming releases. Last week, we had "Super Thursday" when almost 600 new books entered the UK market. In a few weeks more, around 800 new titles will be released in time for the Christmas sales.  In this post, I want to share the books I  anticipate the most. While they may not be to everyone's tastes, those who read my blog with regularity will recognise the genre and style of the books I favour most. Where possible, I've tried to include short videos and photographs (particularly those books most beautiful) to explain in visual form the reasons for my literary covets.  Here are my most anticipated books for the coming months: Orfeia by Joanne Harris Film made by my beautiful daughter to celebrate the pub day of #ORFEIA . MinaLima's Exquisite Fairy Tale Series

Image
MinaLima, the amazingly talented design team behind the props and paraphernalia of the Harry Potter franchise, have published a series of beautiful interactive fairytale books . A post shared by Karin (@karinlipski) on Mar 16, 2017 at 4:31am PDT I first discovered this series while looking for a gift edition of Beauty and the Beast (pictured above) which is truly one of the most beautiful books I own. Unlike most children's fairytale books, MinaLima editions feature interactive elements, such as pull-out maps, dials to change scenery, pop-ups, hidden treasures and more. These hardcover titles feature foiled covers and gorgeous illustrations throughout. This week marks the book birthday of the fourth book in the series, The Little Mermaid and Other Tales: A post shared by Miraphora Mina & Eduardo Lima (@minalimadesign) on Mar 14, 2018 at 9:56am PDT I can't wait to purchase my own copy of The Little Mermaid, it looks to be the best in the series so far! A further title is p...

Hide a Book Day - September 18th 2017

Image
As part of the Ten-Year Anniversary Celebration, Goodreads is teaming up with The Book Fairies for a special Hide a Book Day on Monday, September 18. Everyone has a favourite book (or in my case, a pile of favourites!). To share the love of these books, Goodreads and The Book Fairies invite you to hide your own favourite book for others to discover. You may have heard that Emma Watson did this earlier this year when she shared copies of Our Shared Self. Hiding best-loved books for others to discover has been a "thing" for quite some time now, publicised and promoted by The Book Fairies. But Monday the 18th of September will be a special event, where book lovers from all corners of the world will be hiding their favourite reads for others to discover. Will you get involved? All you need to do is choose a book, and find somewhere safe (and preferably, dry) to hide it. To enhance your finder's experience, you could p urchase stickers from the Book Fairy website , or write a ...

Serial Reader - Fantastic App for Reading Classic Literature

Image
Serial Reader is a fantastic app to help you read those works of classic literature that you're sure you ought  to have read, but somehow can't find the time. The app (currently only available for iOS) breaks down classic works into manageable bite size chunks to read on a daily basis. Each reading is around 10-15 minutes long. Depending on the length of the book, this can take between 2 and 60 days of reading to complete. The basic version of the app is totally free (with no ads!), and is limited to reading only one book at a time, once per day. The full version costs under £3 GBP which enables more books to be added to the reading list, with the option to "skip ahead" when you find yourself with more time to spare on reading. Serial Reader is a really great app to fill in the minutes of a commute, or while waiting in a queue. I have it installed on my phone and was very surprised by how easy it is to use! Learn more or download Serial Reader from the official websit...

100 Best Books of the Decade So Far

Image
The editors at The Oyster Review have painstakingly chosen 100 books released since 2010 which they believe are among the best reads of the decade so far. I was pleased to see some of my own favourites in there: Kate Atkinson's Life After Life and Robin Sloan's Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore among them, and dozens of others which I haven't yet had the opportunity to read. What do you think of these choices? Take a look at the complete list to see for yourself.

Sir Salman Rushdie claims 'I was just fooling around' as his ratings ofother authors' work go viral

Link: Sir Salman Rushdie claims 'I was just fooling around' as his ratings of other authors' work go viral An author’s worst critic is usually themselves – unless Sir Salman Rushdie weighs in with a broadside, that is. The award-winning Rushdie, who has himself been at the receiving end of stringent and often highly personal literary criticism, has now sparked controversy with some trenchant opinions of some authors widely regarded as among the finest of their generation. What exactly is the big problem about Salman Rushdie giving Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning To Kill a Mocking Bird just three stars on Goodreads? He didn’t enjoy it! That doesn’t mean it isn’t a “classic”.
